WASHINGTON, Pa. —\u00a0The Bridgewater College baseball team fell short to Scranton in the opening game of the NCAA regionals in a double-elimination format by a final score of 7-2 Friday afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Eagles will head into the loser’s bracket of the Washington & Jefferson regional with a matchup against the loser of the 2:30 p.m. game Friday between Chicago and Washington & Jefferson.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Both teams were held scoreless to start the game as starting pitching set the tone.\u00a0Each team left at least one runner in scoring position in an effort to break the standstill.\u00a0The Eagles broke the silence with a run scored in the third inning as\u00a0Chandler Valbak<\/a>\u00a0drilled a single in the infield to get\u00a0Nick Stavros<\/a>\u00a0around to score with the help of a throwing miscue to the catcher.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Not too long after did the Scranton Royals respond as an RBI single rang in\u00a0the\u00a0top half of the fourth inning.\u00a0The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the frame with a runner in scoring position, but Scranton’s strong starting pitcher, John\u00a0DeStefano,\u00a0held strong and got out of the jam with the fourth groundout.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0The Royals pressed on the gas in the sixth with an RBI single. Soon after, an\u00a0RBI double\u00a0crossed home plate\u00a0for a 3-1 advantage.\u00a0Cam Nuckols<\/a>\u00a0stopped the surging offense to stay within reach.\u00a0The Eagles had left a runner on base in each inning\u00a0leading up to the bottom of the sixth.\u00a0Once again, BC\u00a0was\u00a0stopped by dominant starting pitching.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
BC attacked again in the seventh, forcing a pitching change with\u00a0Nick Stavros<\/a>\u00a0on third and\u00a0Zack Chadwell<\/a>\u00a0up to bat.\u00a0Chadwell answered the call with a single up the middle\u00a0to knock in Stavros.\u00a0The Eagles were stopped\u00a0as they trailed by one run heading into the eighth.\u00a0SCR added back their insurance run\u00a0with an RBI single and still charged ahead with momentum.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Royals continued to apply offensive pressure in the closing frame with\u00a0three runs scored off four hits. The Eagles had the last chance to find traction in the final frame. However, the pitching remained solid throughout\u00a0and\u00a0closed down\u00a0the BC bats successfully.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
