Meta announced the launch of “Instants” in a blog post<\/a> on Wednesday, May 13. The additional feature allows users to send spontaneous photos directly to Close Friends or mutual followers.<\/p>\n

Instants appear as a small stack of photos in the bottom-right corner of direct message inboxes.<\/p>\n

“No edits, no pressure, just life as it happens,” Meta wrote.<\/p>\n

Unlike Stories, users add captions before sharing and can’t further edit photos. Friends can react and reply, with responses sent directly to DMs, and shared Instants disappear after they’re viewed.<\/p>\n

Instagram said users can quickly undo a shared Instant before friends open it, and pictures can’t be screenshotted. Photos are also saved privately in a user’s archive for up to a year and can later be compiled into a “recap” posted to Stories.<\/p>\n

Users can temporarily hide Instants from their inbox by using a new snooze feature. Meta also\u00a0said all existing safety and privacy protections apply to Instants, including block, mute, and restrict settings.<\/p>\n

Instants resemble what’s offered on other photo- and video-heavy social media platforms like BeReal and Snapchat. In August 2025, Instagram added\u00a0a map that lets users share their location, similar to the Snap Map on Snapchat\u00a0or the iPhone’s “Find My” app.<\/p>\n

Instagram is also testing a separate Instants app in select countries for faster camera access.<\/p>\n

“The app gives you immediate access to the camera \u2014 just log in with your existing Instagram account,” Meta wrote. “Instants you share on the separate app will show up for friends on Instagram and vice versa. We’re trying this separate app out to see how our community uses it, and we’ll continue to evolve it as we learn more.”<\/p>\n

Instants will also have protections for users under 18 years old, including shared time limits, Sleep Mode, parental supervision, and notification settings.<\/p>\n
