A 14-year-old girl was fatally shot inside a Pennsylvania home after a group of juveniles got hold of a gun and began playing with it, police said.<\/p>\n
Upper Darby officers responded to a reported shooting in the 100 block of Springton Road in Upper Darby around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, authorities said.<\/p>\n
Arriving officers found the teenage girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the head in an upstairs back bedroom, according to police and EMS radio traffic. She was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where she later died.<\/p>\n
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt told the press that investigators determined the shooting was not intentional violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we do know is that it wasn’t like this was an act of violence, it wasn’t like this was a fight, it wasn’t a dispute,\u201d Bernhardt said.<\/p>\n
Investigators believe two boys and two girls were inside the home when they got access to a gun in the house, Bernhardt explained. The firearm discharged while they were handling it in the upstairs bedroom, police said.<\/p>\n
A single bullet struck the victim in the head, according to investigators.<\/p>\n
Police initially searched for two Black juvenile males seen running from the home after the shooting, according to radio traffic.<\/p>\n
After what police described as an extensive investigation, Upper Darby Police announced Friday that a 14-year-old boy will be charged as an adult with third-degree murder in connection with the shooting.<\/p>\n
Authorities said witness interviews determined the teen had the gun in his hand when it fired. No one else is facing charges.<\/p>\n
