While May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, awareness alone is no longer enough for families across Pennsylvania. Families living with severe mental illness need action, accountability and meaningful reform.<\/p>\n
As Pennsylvania\u2019s state policy co-chair for the National Shattering Silence Coalition, I witness what many call the \u201cstandard of neglect\u201d every day \u2014 a system that waits for people to deteriorate into crisis before help is allowed.<\/p>\n
An adult with, for instance, schizoaffective disorder may cycle repeatedly through hospitals, emergency rooms, homelessness and jail. These preventable crises cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Yet, even if there are repeated warning signs, our state\u2019s current Mental Health Procedures Act often prevents timely intervention until someone becomes an imminent danger to themselves or others.<\/p>\n
This is not compassionate care. It is reactive crisis management.<\/p>\n
Pennsylvania families are watching loved ones deteriorate while psychiatric beds remain scarce, emergency room boarding times grow longer and law enforcement becomes the default response to untreated illness.<\/p>\n
The human cost is devastating; the financial cost is staggering. Nationally, untreated severe mental illness contributes to an estimated $343 billion annually in avoidable costs tied to incarceration, homelessness, emergency care and lost productivity.<\/p>\n
We can do better.<\/p>\n
Pennsylvania must move from criminal containment to clinical accountability by modernizing our mental health laws and creating a standard of care that prioritizes early intervention, treatment and recovery \u2014 replacing the \u201cright to be sick\u201d with the right to be well.<\/p>\n
