Scranton<\/a> as a way to honor those in active service. Hundreds of people came out to show their support.\u00a0<\/p>\nDennis Hodge of Pocono Lake says members of the military hold a special place in his heart.<\/p>\n
“So my dad is an Iwo Jima survivor, so the blood is deep, so we definitely wanted to come out today. Pay our respects to everybody, and let them know that it doesn’t go unnoticed,” said Hodge.<\/p>\n
“It’s incredible the support that comes out in the crowd, how many people support all of us, how many people weren’t in them in the parade,” said MSG Molly Bogumil of the Army Reserves.<\/p>\n
The parade got its start just outside the Geno Merli Veterans Center on Penn Avenue, with different community groups and bands marching alongside service members. Veterans from all branches of service, saluting those who are doing what they once did for their country.<\/p>\n
“It makes me feel so good that these people care like I do,” said World War II veteran John Lubek.<\/p>\n
“All these people marching in our honor for the job that we’ve done,” said Vietnam Veteran, Donald Van Allen.<\/p>\n
The tradition got its start in the 1950’s, meaning that many generations of people have marched these streets.<\/p>\n
This year’s parade will honor the seven individuals who helped reestablish the parade during the 1990’s.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The community parade we’ve been doing for a lot of years, it was actually my first IDT weekend. It was really awesome to show the community support and be able to march in uniform and see how many people come out to support the service members,” said Bogumil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Decades of tradition continued as the Armed Forces Day parade in Scranton honored active service members.
