It\u2019s not often that a backyard greenhouse blossoms into one of Berks County\u2019s biggest names in landscaping.<\/p>\n
But that\u2019s exactly the story of The Spayd\u2019s Company, Alsace Township.<\/p>\n
The company has its roots in the mid-1970s, when Mary and Edwin Spayd rebuilt an old greenhouse using salvaged glass panels.<\/p>\n
They meant to grow vegetables for their family, but the Spayd\u2019s penchant for organic gardening soon saw neighbors swinging by to pick up plants.<\/p>\n
In 1976, the first version of the business was born.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs children, we sold vegetables door-to-door in baskets to help the family,\u201d Missy Spayd Kauffman, partner at The Spayd\u2019s Company, said in a press release. \u201cEvery quarter mattered. We never imagined it would become a full-time business.\u201d<\/p>\n
For decades, the Spayd children nurtured that dream, growing the business from a seasonal venture into a year-round operation.<\/p>\n
Greenhouses were added, new product lines were introduced, and the family\u2019s collective work ethic became the backbone of the business, Spayd\u2019s said in the release.<\/p>\n
Today, the company has expanded into multiple divisions, offering landscaping, outdoor environments, pool, and construction services.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s commitment to \u201cexceptional quality, craftsmanship, innovative solutions, and customer-focused service,\u201d culminated in April, when Spayd\u2019s celebrated its 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n
To mark the occasion, Spayd\u2019s held an open house at its store at 3225 Pricetown Road.<\/p>\n
The celebration honored the customers, employees and community members whose efforts made Spayd\u2019s a reality.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve grown not just through family leadership but through employees who have become like family, many with 20\u201335 years of dedication and have grown alongside us,\u201d Betsy Spayd-Rothenberger, partner at The Spayd\u2019s Company, said in the release.<\/p>\n
Spayd\u2019s encourages a collaborative, hands-on environment that drives quality and satisfaction, representatives said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe care about the client\u2019s needs and the quality of the process and the work performed,\u201d noted Jim Joyce, design\/sales at The Spayd\u2019s Company.<\/p>\n
The Spayd\u2019s Company has weathered economic challenges, industry shifts, and global events like COVID-19.<\/p>\n
Through each phase, adaptability and the family\u2019s belief in hard work guided the way, the company said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are no shortcuts to success,\u201d said Mike Spayd, partner at The Spayd\u2019s Company. \u201cTo not grow is the beginning of decline. We\u2019ve always believed in adapting and evolving.\u201d<\/p>\n
That adaption was evident in the company\u2019s expansion into in-house pool and construction divisions, as well as its transition from one generation of leadership to the next.<\/p>\n
Another hallmark of Spayd\u2019s is its repeat customers, representatives said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe stand behind our work with quality and honest workmanship,\u201d said Max Spayd, Partner at The Spayd\u2019s Company. \u201cBy consistently delivering excellent products, services, and customer experiences, we have built lasting client loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for the future, the Spayd\u2019s Company is focused on continued innovation and future expansion, including potential growth beyond Pennsylvania, representatives said.<\/p>\n
