LOWER MERION \u2014 Drivers in Lower Merion will have to be more cautious after the township announced it activated its first red-light camera last week.<\/p>\n
The first camera the township activated is at Remighton Road and Lancaster Avenue in Wynnewood.<\/p>\n
Violators will receive warnings through June 5, and then fines of $100 begin on June 6.<\/p>\n
In July 2025, commissioners authorized the use of the cameras by passing an ordinance.<\/p>\n
According to township officials, a trained police officer will review every picture to verify vehicle information and ensure the vehicle is in violation. Violations will be mailed only to vehicle owners when it is clear the vehicle ran a red light.<\/p>\n
A red light violation occurs when the vehicle is clearly behind the stop line, the traffic light is red, and the vehicle continues through the intersection.<\/p>\n
Under the rules for the lights, the township will not receive any revenue from the program, except to recoup the costs of equipment and personnel expenses directly related to it.<\/p>\n
Each ticket will also include a contest section listing valid defenses, including vehicle owners who were not driving at the time of the infraction, car owners who reported their vehicle stolen or sold, or people who were part of a funeral procession.<\/p>\n
A violation will not be part of the vehicle owner\u2019s operating record under the state\u2019s Motor Vehicle Code. No points will be added to the driving record of the vehicle\u2019s owner.<\/p>\n
