EASTON, Pa. – A park in Northampton County is getting 100 more trees.<\/p>\n
Easton Urban Conservation planted the trees along Spring Creek at Lower Hackett Park, with the help of more than two dozen volunteers.<\/p>\n
In fact, organizers said thanks to all of the hard work, the group wrapped up the project hours early.<\/p>\n
The volunteers planted trees and shrubs of all kinds, to help strengthen the buffer zone of Spring Creek, since officials said it has been caving in due to storms.<\/p>\n
“I love the environment,” said Jeremy Gold, a volunteer.<\/p>\n
Gold came ready to plant trees.<\/p>\n
Intense heat on Tuesday morning did not phase any of the volunteers, especially Gold.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t care about the temperature,” Gold said. “They gave us ice water and snacks in these towels to keep ourselves cool.<\/p>\n
He’s joining the other dedicated volunteers, local business owners and friendly faces.<\/p>\n
“It’s such a good feeling to know that you have a hands-on part of building something,” Gold said.<\/p>\n
“We’re planting a lot of new trees and shrubs,” said Tighe Nostrand, owner of Friendly Tree Service.<\/p>\n
100 different kinds, along Spring Creek, which runs behind the Micro-Forest in Lower Hackett Park.<\/p>\n
For these folks, it’s a passion.<\/p>\n
“A couple of years ago, I planted a tree at Jacobsburg, and just this past weekend I went back to check on it, and it’s still there,” Gold said.<\/p>\n
“When you plant a tree, it gives you another level of connection that you wouldn’t have. Someone can come back in 20 years and know that they planted that tree,” said Brandon Sullivan, sustainability coordinator for the City of Easton.<\/p>\n
The Riparian Buffer Restoration Project was funded by a $18,000 grant through the Arbor Day Foundation.<\/p>\n
The funds were from the Linde Corporation, an industrial gas company.<\/p>\n
The company’s Associate Director of Operations Gregory McKinski said their team traded their desk jobs for sneakers and shovels.<\/p>\n
“It’s a beautiful day, so it feels good,” said McKinski.<\/p>\n
City of Easton Urban Conservation Manager Rob Christopher said the planting is another step closer to transforming the park into an educational conservation area.<\/p>\n
The educational conservation area will include plans for a nursery, education building and much more.<\/p>\n
“Once we get everything in and watered and staked, and we have really, there’s a big deer population here, so once we get that all protected from the deer for the buck rub in the Fall, and we should be in good shape,” said Christopher. “It’s so close to the city and West Easton, and it’s really something to see.”<\/p>\n
