The Pittsburgh Pirates made a move in the bullpen prior to Wednesday night\u2019s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Right-hander Isaac Mattson is being optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis and prospect Wilber Dotel will be recalled to take his place, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now. <\/p>\n

Mattson has made 21 appearances for the Pirates this season and has a 4.21 ERA. In 19.2 innings, he\u2019s allowed 19 hits, walked 10 and struck out 15. Over his last five appearances dating back to April 30, Mattson has given up seven runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.<\/p>\n

The Pirates only used Mattson four times since the calendar flipped to May \u2014 a total of three innings \u2014 and he twice had stretches of five-plus days without pitching during that span. <\/p>\n

Dotel, meanwhile, made three appearances with the Pirates when he was called up for the first time last month. The 23-year-old allowed one run on just two hits in 6.2 innings (1.35 ERA) and struck out four batters.<\/p>\n

In six appearances\/four starts with Indianapolis this season, Dotel, who is considered Pittsburgh\u2019s 11th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, is 3-3 with a 5.32 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 23.2 innings. <\/p>\n

Entering play on Wednesday, the Pirates rank 17th in MLB with a 4.22 bullpen ERA. <\/p>\n
