LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. \u2014 The cut of a ribbon culminates years of hard work that’s been underway to finally open the Nay Aug Park multi-court project.<\/p>\n
“It was great to be able to stand here with all of our partners, our vendors, our engineers, our project management team, our recreation authority, our state reps, our county commissioners to celebrate the opening of these courts right here at Nay Aug,” said Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti. “It’s a partnership with state funding, along with city funding. We’re very proud of getting to this, and it took a lot of teamwork.”<\/p>\n
The renovations replace what was once part of the park’s pool complex with several basketball and pickleball courts.<\/p>\n
A new way Tom Gervasi and friends plan to enjoy their time outside.<\/p>\n
“Well, it’s getting much better now. When I was a kid, this was a big swimming pool and stuff. I’m kind of old, but I remember I used to bring the elephant up to wash it when they drained the pool midseason, and the elephant would have a good time here,” said Gervasi.<\/p>\n
With more than 100 members in their pickleball group, Gervasi says the eight new courts will be used regularly by fans of the growing sport.<\/p>\n
“The more the better because sometimes you’re going places that you can only play for a couple of hours because there’s something else going on in that gym or something, but this year is going to open up a lot of play time for us,” said Gervasi.<\/p>\n
The new courts will soon be joined by a multi-million-dollar Nay Aug pool project that the city began working on almost two years ago.<\/p>\n
“The Everhart is doing better than ever, so we have all these great assets. The Brooks Mine, it’s going to be a great summer here in Nay Aug and really a beginning of a whole new era for the park,” said Cognetti.<\/p>\n
