Councilman Khari Mosley is leading the discussion at the city council building downtown. “They are also commonly known as teen takeovers and flash mobs, and these kinds of gatherings are usually generated via social media and cause these spontaneous gatherings that, unfortunately, sometimes end in violence or property damage,” Mosley said. Mosley highlighted several incidents involving large groups of teenagers, including a deadly shooting near Market Square earlier this month. In response, a temporary policy in Market Square now requires minors to be accompanied by an adult from 3 p.m. to midnight, Thursday through Sunday. “We are dealing with this issue of flash crowd disturbances that we’ve seen in Market Square, that we’ve seen in East Liberty, that we’ve seen on the South Side, and really look at what are the root causes, strategies to make our streets safer,” Mosley said. “These are all of our children, and it’s time for the village to come together and find a solution.”Leon Ford, representing the Hear Foundation, is participating as a panelist to offer his perspective. “There’s a lot to complain about, but there are always things that we can do about it, so I like to focus on what we can actually do about it,” Ford said. Pastor Michael Day of Legacy International Worship Center, who works closely with youth in the community, emphasized the importance of hearing directly from teenagers during future meetings, which Mosley confirmed is part of the plan. “I have a direct connection with the youth at my church. There’s a relationship there. How can I help? How can I be a part of this? I believe faith and community should be a part of this whole discussion in the first place,” Day said.
