A local lawyer who specializes in working with startups and venture capital told Technical.ly that it\u2019s not an unusual strategy, but a pattern of buying up companies can signal strength.<\/p>\n<p>Another unsurprising <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/terrapower-450m-nuclear-medicine-plant-philadelphia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 trend<\/a> continued in the life sciences space this month, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biotech company Verismo Therapeutics secured $28 million to continue development of its lead drug candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plus, local economic development leaders launched a new workforce development partnership with the goal of growing job opportunities in the Philadelphia region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Get all the details about these money moves and more, below.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Phenom acquires 3rd HR startup in 2026\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/company\/phenom\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phenom<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260428121064\/en\/Phenom-Acquires-Plum-to-Verify-What-AI-Cant-Fake-Human-Behavior-at-Work?utm_campaign=Oktopost-ACQUISITION&amp;utm_content=Oktopost-&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquired talent assessment platform Plum<\/a>, marking the HR tech company\u2019s third acquisition this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plum\u2019s platform collects information about a job candidate\u2019s personality and mental capabilities to predict if they would fit certain roles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Phenom <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/persevere-therapeutics-seed-round-cancer-drug-philadelphia-money-moves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">purchased Be Applied<\/a>, another talent evaluation tool, in February and <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/phenom-acquires-included-philadelphia-power-moves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agentic AI startup Included<\/a> in January. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon for healthy startups to buy other companies at a fast rate like this, Kimberly Klayman, partner at Ballard Spahr, told Technical.ly. Sometimes it\u2019s because they want to add on a tool that is easier to buy than build themselves, or it can help them secure financing from the acquired company\u2019s cap table, along with talent, Klayman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These deals can also help a startup build revenue and EBITDA, a profitability metric, which makes the company stronger as they prepare to exit, she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s a sophisticated startup with a great board of investors, my expectation is that you have good advisors who understand the implications and the relative weights involved in doing a [merger and acquisition] deal,\u201d Klayman said.<\/p>\n<p>Those incentives line up with Phenom\u2019s strategy. The startup weighs three main criteria when considering an acquisition: the strength of a company\u2019s underlying infrastructure, whether it adds vertical depth in a specific industry and whether it improves operational efficiency, cofounder and CEO Mahe Bayireddi previously told Technical.ly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the last five years, Phenom has acquired six other companies, including <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/startups\/phenom-acquires-edge-philadelphia-power-moves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">talent platform EDGE<\/a> last February, <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/software-development\/phenom-buys-tydy-startup-acquisition\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">employee data platform Tydy<\/a> in summer 2024 and employee experience platform <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/startups\/phenom-fourth-acquisition-european-expansion-ipo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tandemploy in 2022<\/a>. Over six months in 2020 and 2021, the company purchased AI scheduling platform <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/startups\/hr-tech-company-phenom-people-makes-first-acquisition-ai-driven-scheduling-platform-my-ally\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">My Ally<\/a>, recruitment tool <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/startups\/phenom-acquired-endouble\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Endouble<\/a> and video tech company <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/startups\/phenom-acquired-talentcube\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Talentcube<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Verismo Therapeutics raises $28M\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biotech company <a href=\"https:\/\/verismotherapeutics.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Verismo Therapeutics<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/verismo-therapeutics-announces-28-million-investment-from-hlb-innovation-to-accelerate-kir-car-clinical-development-302742411.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landed $28 million<\/a> to support the development of its two lead drugs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The funding comes from Verismo\u2019s parent company, HLB Innovation, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/verismo-therapeutics-completes-merger-to-accelerate-clinical-development-302336395.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">merged with Verismo in 2024<\/a>. HLB Innovation had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/verismo-therapeutics-announces-17-million-in-a-second-pre-series-a-with-dongkoo-bio-hlb-innovation-and-hlb-as-lead-investors-301877717.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously invested<\/a> in Verismo before the deal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Verismo is developing CAR T-cell therapies called the KIR-CAR platform for both solid tumors and blood cancers. The funding will support ongoing Phase 1 clinical trials for its two lead drug candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are fortunate to have investors who fully believe in our KIR-CAR programs and have supported our two lead programs since the inception,\u201d cofounder and CEO Bryan Kim told Technical.ly. \u201cAs a result, we have been able to focus our efforts and resources solely on our clinical development.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A new economic mobility group for Greater Philadelphia backed by $5.4M<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, economic and workforce development leaders in the Philly region launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greaterphlgrowth.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greater Philadelphia Growth Partnership<\/a>, a cross-sector group working to address job growth and economic mobility in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The partnership secured $5.4 million to support the first three years of building up programming.<\/p>\n<p>This effort has already been underway for two years through a group started by Pew Charitable Trusts. Before, the partnership was focused on looking at data about the region and planning how to address these challenges. Now, it\u2019s ready to take action, Claire Marrazzo Greenwood, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Growth Partnership, told Technical.ly.<\/p>\n<p>By bringing together stakeholders from Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware counties, the ultimate goal is to secure job growth for people with and without college degrees, Marrazzo Greenwood said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure that we\u2019re providing economic opportunity for those that are the least mobile within our system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The group put together a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greaterphlgrowth.com\/regional-growth-strategy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regional growth strategy report<\/a> that identifies economic competitiveness and mobility challenges. Now the group is ready to implement solutions. The strategy outlines three sectors with potential for widespread job growth: enterprise digital solutions, manufacturing in industrial technologies and biomedical engineering and production.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also aims to bring new companies into the region, help companies that are already here want to stay, understand what talent companies need and train employees to do those jobs, Marrazzo Greenwood said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More money moves:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/workforce\/ucd-president-energy-ownership-venture-philadelphia-power-moves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Datavault AI<\/a>, a company that helps businesses make money from their data, signed a letter of intent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260501498832\/en\/Datavault-AI-and-CyberCatch-Announce-Signing-of-Binding-Letter-of-Intent-for-Datavault-AI-to-Acquire-CyberCatch-to-Accelerate-AI-Driven-Quantum-Resistant-Cyber-Risk-Mitigation-Solutions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquire cybersecurity company CyberCatch Holdings<\/a> earlier this month. It\u2019s the third acquisition the company plans to close this year, CEO Nathaniel Bradley told Technical.ly. The company already acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessnewswire.com\/newsroom\/en\/computers-technology-and-internet\/datavault-ai-enters-into-definitive-agreement-to-acquire-nyiax-co-1149190\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blockchain trading platform NYIAX<\/a> and entertainment technology company <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.datavaultsite.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/417\/datavault-ai-inc-completes-acquisition-of-api-media\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">API Media Innovation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Computer vision company Signum Technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/formds.com\/issuers\/signum-technologies-inc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised $1.2 million<\/a>, according to an SEC filing.<\/p>\n<p>Greenlight Networks, a fiber-optic internet service provider, announced plans for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenlightnetworks.com\/greenlight-networks-invests-62-million-to-bring-high-speed-fiber-internet-to-pennsylvanias-lehigh-valley\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$62 million internet service expansion<\/a> in the Lehigh Valley, which will be completed by the end of 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lab technology company <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/company\/agilent-technologies-inc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Agilent Technologies<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260519515503\/en\/Agilent-to-Supply-Next-Generation-Alarm-Resolution-Technology-to-U.S.-Airport-Security-Screening-Checkpoints-ahead-of-FIFA-World-Cup-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won a contract<\/a> from the Transportation Security Administration to implement its bulk security screening technology system at FIFA World Cup US host city airports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The New Jersey Economic Development Authority chose five startups to invest in through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njeda.gov\/5-new-jersey-businesses-receive-funding-through-nj-innovation-evergreen-fund\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new $4.65 million New Jersey Innovation Evergreen Fund<\/a>, including local e-commerce platform <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/lula-commerce-series-a-raise\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lula Commerce<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/dli\/newsroom\/shapiro-administration-invests--2-8-million-in-industry-partners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">distributed $2.8 million<\/a> in Industry Partnership grants to 10 organizations in the state to support workforce development partnerships. This includes the Chester County Workforce Development Board, University City District and Elevate 215.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alex Price, a scientist at the research institution the <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/company\/wistar-institute\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wistar Institute<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wistar.org\/press-releases\/wistar-institute-scientist-dr-alex-price-awarded-prestigious-early-career-nih-grant\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won a $2.5 million grant<\/a> from the National Institutes of Health. The funding will support Price\u2019s research on the ways immune cells tell the difference between our own RNA and viral RNA.<\/p>\n<p>Sports sponsorship agency BASE Sports Group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/04\/15\/balius-partners-invests-15m-in-base-sports-group\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised $2.5 million<\/a> to grow the company\u2019s sales and operations teams and build out its data analytics tools.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightscline.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lightscline<\/a>, a central PA-based startup building AI tools to analyze manufacturing data, recently secured $650,000 to further product development and expand its team, founder and CEO Ankur Verma told Technical.ly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Longtime Philly streetwear brand Hardlife Apparel Company launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/hrdlfcoin.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HRDLFcoin<\/a> on the Solana blockchain.
