{"id":198903,"date":"2026-05-21T14:54:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T14:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/198903\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T14:54:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T14:54:07","slug":"philadelphia-names-may-21-ona-judge-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/198903\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia names May 21 Ona Judge Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia will officially recognize May 21 as \u201cOna Judge Day,\u201d honoring the woman who escaped enslavement after fleeing President George Washington\u2019s household in the city on that day in 1796.\n<\/p>\n<p>Judge, an enslaved woman who worked as a seamstress and personal attendant to Martha Washington, was among the nine enslaved people Washington rotated between his Philadelphia residence and Virginia plantation to evade Pennsylvania\u2019s gradual abolition law.\n<\/p>\n<p>Judge is recognized in one of the many placards on display at the President\u2019s House Site in Philadelphia\u2019s Independence National Historic Park.
