Erie\u2019s Public Schools are taking a major step toward a cleaner future with the introduction of their first electric school bus fleet, unveiled Wednesday at the district\u2019s transportation office on West 16th Street.<\/p>\n
The new fleet includes 12 buses retrofitted with electric engines, marking a significant investment in environmentally friendly transportation for the district. Funded through $48 million in federal support, the buses are already being integrated into daily operations.<\/p>\n
District officials say the electric buses will primarily be used for regular routes and shorter trips, as each vehicle has a range of about 100 miles per charge. To support the transition, on-site charging stations have been installed at the transportation facility.<\/p>\n
Although the buses arrived last fall, they began servicing students earlier this year. Officials note the vehicles are expected to have a battery lifespan of 10 to 15 years, making them a long-term investment in sustainable infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Reaction among drivers has been mixed. While some are excited about the quieter, cleaner technology, others are still adjusting to the change from traditional diesel-powered buses.<\/p>\n
