Two Lower Macungie Democrats faced off Tuesday<\/a> for their chance to challenge Republican incumbent Gary Day in the 187th state House District in Lehigh County.<\/p>\n

Rachel Cuevas was projected by the Associated Press to defeat Geoffrey Whitcomb as she held an overwhelming lead, 69% to 31%, taking all 23 precincts in the district.<\/p>\n

Cuevas, a former human resources recruiter, told Armchair Lehigh Valley<\/a> that she was running as a working mom and community advocate whose priorities included protecting farmland and open space, supporting working families, improving infrastructure and protecting access to health care.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy promise is simple: I will be accessible, transparent and fight every day for practical solutions that put our communities first,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Whitcomb, a music teacher and minister, told Armchair he would put people first, supported equitable education funding and supporting emergency services providers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will work every day to represent and serve all of us by prioritizing all of us, while protecting all of our rights to live here in freedom and peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The 187th includes Alburtis, Macungie, Heidelberg Township, Lower Macungie Township, Lynn Township, parts of Upper Macungie Township, Washington Township and Weisenberg Township.<\/p>\n

Day, who was unopposed in the Republican primary, represented the district from 2009 to 2022. He returned to office in 2024, replacing now U.S. Rep. Ryan Mackenzie.<\/p>\n
