Warren, PA – The unofficial start to Memorial Day weekend was marked Saturday, May 23rd in the City of Warren as community members gathered for the 58th annual Four Flags Ceremony.<\/p>\n
Because of colder temperatures and rain, this year\u2019s event was moved to St. John\u2019s Lutheran Church in Pleasant Township.<\/p>\n
The ceremony honors the region\u2019s rich heritage through the four flags representing the Seneca Nation, France, Britain and America, with the Betsy Ross flag. This year\u2019s ceremony also carried added significance as the 58th annual event coincides with the 250th anniversary of both Pennsylvania and the United States.<\/p>\n
Music during the ceremony was provided by members of the Warren Area High School band.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t see too many events that last 58 years, and that\u2019s just a testimony to how much we treasure the history of Warren,\u201d said Michael Suppa, Chairperson for the Parks and Recreation Commission.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a great celebration and it has a lot of history,\u201d said Mike Holtz, city manager. \u201cIt honors everyone who was here at one time and it\u2019s a part of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
The keynote address was delivered by Army veteran and DCNR ranger Michael Marinkovich, who reflected on service, sacrifice and the importance of remembering those who founded the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnderstanding the past helps us prepare for the future and present, and it\u2019s good to know the whole story,\u201d Marinkovich said.<\/p>\n
Local scouts from the Chief Cornplanter Council Troop 13 also played a major role in the ceremony. After services inside the church concluded, scouts made their way to Crescent Park where, between the raindrops, they raised the four flags.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis ceremony is a long-standing tradition for our area and it is very unique,\u201d said Warren County Commissioner Dan Glotz, who is also involved with Troop 13. \u201cIt was wonderful to have the community come out to support it, despite the weather.\u201d<\/p>\n
