WindCreekEventCenter.com<\/a><\/p>\nPlatt said he was a fan of the band long before becoming its front-man in 2014. He remembers picking up a copy of Kansas\u2019 1976 album, \u201cLeftoverture,\u201d after hearing \u201cCarry on Wayward Son\u201d played repeatedly on the radio. Platt said it was the diversity of Kansas\u2019 music that appealed to him.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou look at \u2018Carry on Wayward Son\u2019 and \u2018Dust in the Wind\u2019\u2013\u2013 you can not put those two songs in the same genre. It doesn\u2019t fit,\u201d Platt said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got the really super progressive stuff \u2014 \u2018Miracles Out of Nowhere,\u2019 with a flugelhorn in the middle, but then you got songs like \u2018Got to Rock On,\u2019 or \u2018Fight Fire with Fire,\u2019 that are straight-ahead rock songs. I always liked that diversity in bands because it really shows their talent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Platt jokes that even now, fans need to see the band multiple times to fully and appreciate what they are hearing \u2014 and seeing \u2014 on stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re watching Eric, you\u2019re going to miss what Joe\u2019s doing. And if you\u2019re watching Joe, you\u2019re going to miss what Scott\u2019s doing. There\u2019s just so much going on and the players are so great,\u201d Platt said. \u201cThose intrical parts that, as different as they can be, they can still seamlessly connect together and that\u2019s a really cool thing about Kansas music.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Before joining Kansas, Platt fronted the band Shooting Star. But he said that experience was not enough to prepare him for what was about to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cShooting Star, maybe in our busiest year, we did 15 gigs. I didn\u2019t even quit my job driving a truck for the Corrugated Company,\u201d Platt said. \u201cI had no idea what I was in for.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Before Platt had a chance to get his feet wet, he was learning to swim in the deep end.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey said they wanted to do 45 to 60 shows a year and my first full year, which was 2015, we did 98 shows and then we had our Christmas break, then went right into the studio,\u201d Platt said. \u201cIn 2016 we recorded \u2018The Prelude Implicit\u2019 and I lived in Atlanta for six weeks while we were recording that. Right when got finished with that, we went right back out on the road.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Since taking over at the helm, Platt has watched Kansas\u2019 fanbase become as diverse as their music. Platt said it\u2019s not just longtime Kansas fans who are coming to see them, it\u2019s their children and grandchildren, too.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I first joined the band, it was an older audience. I remember those first two, three months that we we played, we were doing some modest casinos. Think about it: \u2018Leftoverture\u2019 came out in \u201876. If you were 18, 19, 20-years-old in \u201876, well, how old are you in 2014? Do the math. You\u2019re not exactly in your 30s,\u201d Platt joked. \u201cIt\u2019s been so gratifying, to me, to see the audience get younger and younger, and I don\u2019t mean because I\u2019m getting older.<\/p>\n
He attributes that multi-generational appeal to the band\u2019s music being featured in television and films \u2013 pointing out Will Ferrell\u2019s \u201cpristine rendition” of \u201cDust in the Wind\u201d in the 2003 comedy \u201cOld School\u201d \u2014 and inclusion in the popular \u201cGuitar Hero\u201d franchise.<\/p>\n
But he said the biggest shot in the arm was the T-V show \u201cSupernatural\u201d unofficially adopting \u201cCarry on Wayward Son\u201d as its theme song. In 2017, the band surprised fans during a \u201cSupernatural\u201d panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, performing the song to an exuberant crowd inside Hall H.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen that room filled up with those kids, and those kids were singing, I couldn\u2019t hear my monitor at all,\u201d Platt said. \u201cIt restores my faith in the youth of America, to see kids get into this music, because it\u2019s intense music and especially if they\u2019re influenced enough to play an instrument, boy, you couldn\u2019t pick a better band that\u2019s going to really stretch you to the limits of your talent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
