As communities across the country prepare to celebrate America\u2019s 250th birthday, one Erie County organization is honoring both local and national history at the same time.<\/p>\n

The Fairview Area Historical Society is celebrating its 50th anniversary alongside the nation\u2019s upcoming 250th birthday with a yearlong series of events focused on preserving community history and looking toward the future.<\/p>\n
Jim Brinling, the President of the Fairview Historical Society explained the reasoning behind the celebration, “Everybody wants a feeling to be rooted in a place and understanding where and how we became the community that we are helps us understand out community together and helps us plan together for the future.”<\/p>\n
Founding member Sabina Shields Freeman said the organization has grown significantly since it was founded in 1976 and continues to see renewed interest from the community.<\/p>\n
Freeman says understanding local history helps residents feel connected to the community while also shaping the future of Fairview. She added that the society is encouraged by the growing enthusiasm surrounding local preservation efforts. According to Freeman, \u201cRight now we are experiencing a lot of interest, a lot of professional type interest and we are thrilled that it’s moving along and growing.\u201d<\/p>\n
As part of the celebration, the society is collecting items for a special founders\u2019 time capsule that will be buried at the end of the year and reopened in 2076. Organizers are asking community members to contribute family-friendly and community-focused items that reflect everyday life in 2026.<\/p>\n
As Brinling explained, \u201cWe are honoring everyone with our founder’s time capsule, which is going to be opened in 2076. We are looking for items, and pictures, and notes and anything that is family friendly and community friendly to go into the time capsule to help people in the future understand what life was like today in 2026 as part of our America 250 celebration.”<\/p>\n
Items already collected include photographs, notes, and memorabilia from local businesses, including one of the iconic shirts from Whippy Dip.<\/p>\n
Freeman said preserving history through projects like the time capsule gives future generations a meaningful glimpse into everyday life today, much like residents would value opening a capsule from 50 years ago. According to Freeman, \u201cIt’s wonderful if we could have opened something at that point or today could have opened something that came from 50 years ago, that’s just a little slice of life that came from going on there and to think that we touched it and people who touched it before that.”<\/p>\n
