ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.<\/p>\n
Monday marks Memorial Day, a time to remember those who lost their lives to protect our freedoms.<\/p>\n
This weekend, Parkland High School hosted a field of honor.<\/p>\n
500 flags were planted for the Rotary Club of Allentown West’s second annual Flags for Unity event.<\/p>\n
“We’ve put 500 United States flags in the field and people dedicate those flags to their heroes,” says Herb Klotz, Chair, Flags for Unity.<\/p>\n
People can adopt or purchase a flag.<\/p>\n
Money raised goes back into the community toward programs that fight food insecurity and help veterans.<\/p>\n
Some community members sponsored multiple flags.<\/p>\n
“The one that’s probably most dear to my heart is my uncle who fought in WWII,” says Gail Micca, Halo\/ Flag Sponsor<\/p>\n
Commemorations started Thursday and wrapped up on Memorial Day with a solemn closing ceremony.<\/p>\n
“It gives the opportunity for people to recognize the sacrifices, the individual sacrifices that service members made in the line of duty,” says Dr. Benjamin Lobst a keynote speaker and retired army sergeant.<\/p>\n
