A reboot! We are excited to announce that PhillyPUG is back.<\/p>\n

The Philadelphia Python Users Group is kicking off its first meetup<\/a> since a pandemic-era hiatus on Wednesday, May 28, at Jon M. Huntsman Hall on the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s campus. The evening will feature two talks: a 101-level introduction to leveraging Docker as a Python developer, and a deep dive into Python enums \u2014 features, patterns and quirks discovered while working on the ty type checker<\/a> from Astral.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re a lifelong Python user or just picking it up for the first time, we\u2019re thrilled to have you join us.<\/p>\n

A look back at PhillyPUG<\/p>\n

Originally founded in 2009, PhillyPUG<\/a> has grown into one of the city\u2019s longest-running tech communities, with more than 3,000 members on Meetup as part of the Python Software Foundation\u2019s Meetup Pro Network.<\/p>\n

For years, it was led by organizers Maneesha Sane, Sarah Gray, Dan Williams and Timothy Allen. The group regularly hosted presentations during the academic year, monthly project hack nights and a yearly Introduction to Python class. Speakers ranged from local Pythonistas to luminaries including Jacob Kaplan-Moss, co-founder of Django, and Travis Oliphant, the creator of NumPy.<\/p>\n

Then came the pandemic, and like many in-person communities, PhillyPUG went quiet. After several years off, we are picking it back up.<\/p>\n

Where do we go from here? You help decide<\/p>\n

The relaunch takes place<\/a> at Jon M. Huntsman Hall at the Wharton School (3730 Walnut St.).<\/p>\n

The Docker session is geared toward Python developers who haven\u2019t yet incorporated containers into their workflows. The enums talk goes deeper into language internals, sharing patterns, edge cases and lessons learned while contributing to ty, the new Python type checker being developed by Astral.<\/p>\n

Both talks are designed to give attendees something useful to take back to their own work, whether that\u2019s a new tool to try or a clearer mental model for one they already use.<\/p>\n

Going forward, we plan to continue monthly talks and hack nights, and above all, keep this community-driven.<\/p>\n
