A redevelopment project for Easton Area High School received smooth sailing from the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission\u2019s Comprehensive Planning Committee during Tuesday\u2019s virtual meeting.<\/p>\n
The project calls for the demolition and redevelopment of the high school at 2601 William Penn Highway in Palmer Township. The 250,444-square-foot building would have updated parking lots and maintain its existing access points at 25th Street and William Penn Highway.<\/p>\n
Palmer Township Director of Planning Craig Beavers said this is one of the more complicated projects the township had to review in recent years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis project not only involves the construction of a new high school, but it also has to do with coordination of the existing high school as well,\u201d said Beavers, who is also a committee member and abstained from voting on this issue. \u201cBoth buildings are planned to be in existence at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n
The committee approved a draft letter to the township, which will go before the full LVPC on Thursday night. Township officials will then consider the recommendations before making a final decision on the project.<\/p>\n
The nearly $300 million project would add a larger gymnasium and auditorium along with common spaces and updated science labs, art and music rooms and technical education labs. The older wing would be demolished as part of the final phase in 2031.<\/p>\n
