The Philadelphia Union fired their head coach Bradley Carnell amid a disappointing start to the season.<\/p>\n
The Major League Soccer (MLS) club announced Carnell\u2019s firing on Wednesday, May 27. They plan to begin a global search for their next head coach immediately. Ryan Richter \u2013 who coaches the team\u2019s affiliate Philadelphia Union II — will be the club\u2019s interim head coach.<\/p>\n
“On behalf of the Philadelphia Union organization, I want to thank Bradley for his dedication and commitment to the club during his time here,\u201d Jay Sugarman, the Philadelphia Union\u2019s Principal Owner, said. \u201cHe brought professionalism and passion to his role, and we appreciate everything he has contributed to the team and the organization. We are confident that he will find success in his future coaching endeavors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carnell was hired as the Union\u2019s fourth head coach in team history in January 2025. He led the team to a Supporters\u2019 Shield crest \u2013 an annual award given to the MLS team with the best regular season record — and was named the Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Year in 2025.<\/p>\n
However, the Union struggled under Carnell in the 2026 season. They currently have the worst record in the league at 1-10-4.<\/p>\n

To my staff and especially the players, thank you for your hard work and dedication through both the highs and the challenges, you inspired me every day and I appreciate the opportunity to have been part of this team.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Union also announced Wednesday that they named Jon Scheer as their new Sporting Director. With the role, Scheer will oversee the club\u2019s sporting operations, including player recruitment, roster management, scouting and technical strategy.<\/p>\n
\u201cJon has consistently demonstrated strong leadership, a deep understanding of our club philosophy, and a clear vision for the future of the Philadelphia Union,\u201d Sugarman said. \u201cAs we enter a new chapter for the organization, we are confident in Jon\u2019s ability to lead our sporting operations and get us back on track with a culture centered around development, ambition, and sustained success.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scheer previously served as the Union\u2019s Director of Academy and Professional Development and most recently as interim sporting director.<\/p>\n
