Public health officials in Philadelphia and four other World Cup host cities convened to discuss safety preparations ahead of the tournament. Their meeting focused on reducing health risks from crowds, travel, and potential infectious diseases.<\/p>\n
“We know it will be hot. We know that there’s a good possibility that there will be poor air quality if there are wildfires,” Philadelphia Health Commissioner Palak Raval-Nelson said during the event on Wednesday, May 27, hosted by the Big Cities Health Coalition. “We know that some folks will take the opportunity to enjoy themselves too much and may get exposed to substances or other items that would not be so good for them.”<\/p>\n
According to a PhillyVoice report<\/a>, Raval-Nelson outlined public health strategies such as activating cooling centers for heat emergencies, directing people to the Breathe Philly air-quality map, and offering Ready Philadelphia<\/a> alerts in 11 languages for international travelers.<\/p>\n Additionally, the city will implement enforcement actions, including inspections of safe alcohol service and extended-hours permits. On-site checks at Fan Fest and pre-approval checks for bars seeking 4 a.m. permits will also be in effect.<\/p>\n Philadelphia plans to expand lab testing and wastewater monitoring, activate sentinel surveillance, and coordinate with hospitals and clinicians to stay ahead of potential outbreaks, according to the PhillyVoice.<\/p>\n
