PITTSBURGH \u2014 Weeks before Rico Dowdle<\/a> put pen to paper and joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, his mother put the move into the ether.<\/p>\n

All it took was seeing the news that Mike McCarthy<\/a> was taking over for his hometown team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think my mom was the first one to say it,\u201d the tailback said after Thursday\u2019s OTA practice at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. \u201cWhen she\u2019d seen him get hired, she called me and said, \u2018You\u2019re going to Pittsburgh.\u2019 Like, as soon as he got hired, that\u2019s the first thing she said.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dowdle played under McCarthy with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020-24, getting his first shot to prove himself as a legitimate pro ball carrier. He went for 1,079 yards and two touchdowns on 235 carries during their last year together with America\u2019s Team, then joined the Carolina Panthers for last season.<\/p>\n

With the Steelers, Dowdle joins Jaylen Warren<\/a>, both being guys who went undrafted before their play demanded solid roles in an offense. Steelers running backs coach Ramon Chinyoung<\/a> believes the pair will take on a \u201cthunder and lightning\u201d sort of identity. Warren slimmed down some this offseason \u2014 he weights 208 pounds right now, he said \u2014 and Dowdle showed up this week looking tough to drag down.<\/p>\n

Chinyoung also said on Wednesday that McCarthy stresses having 55 rushes and completions per game, an objective that Dowdle credits as part of the reason he was able to make a name for himself in Dallas.<\/p>\n

Dowdle is also happy to be back working with Chinyoung, who he said has a \u201cone of a kind\u201d personality.<\/p>\n
