(WOLF) — As sunshine filled the city streets, Mayor Paige Cognetti, members of her administration, and city officials gathered to celebrate a milestone in Scranton’s streetscape initiative, the completion of its first project on Cedar Avenue.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the launch of several streetscape improvement projects across Scranton. The investments are aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility for both pedestrians and motorists.

The completed Cedar Avenue streetscape project in South Scranton upgrades a key corridor from Orchard Street to Alder Street, enhancing a major gateway into the city from Interstate 81 and the President Biden Expressway.

Mayor Cognetti discussed other streetscape projects currently in progress and explained how the completed Cedar Avenue improvements will enhance safety for both pedestrians and drivers.

“We also have Main Ave up in West Side. And of course, our downtown streetscapes that we’re working on. It’s been so important for us that we work on our road safety to make our city safer for pedestrians, for drivers, and make it better for economic development, and make sure that we are continuing to have folks invest here in the city and that we have people at work. So, this is a nearly $700,000 project right here on Cedar Ave,” said Cognetti.

“It’s been great to work with all of our partners on this, and we were excited to officially cut the ribbon on these new safe sidewalks,” said Cognetti.

Looking ahead, Mayor Cognetti said the city will continue pursuing infrastructure improvements across Scranton to enhance traffic safety and improve accessibility.

“We are always on the lookout for grants for these main thoroughfares. Pittston Avenue, just up the road here. We’ve been looking for years to get the funding together to do just this up there. We still haven’t put that funding together, but we continue to look for grants for Pittston Avenue. We want to do more on Green Ridge Street. We want to do more on Main Ave in West Side. So, it’s really for us after the downtown core, making sure that we’re building out this traffic safety into the rest of the city,” said Cognetti.

The city also views Cedar Avenue as a critical link in South Scranton, supporting local business growth and connecting residents and visitors traveling by car, bike, or on foot, according to a 2023 walkability study.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO.
