Residents of a Bethlehem housing development were evacuated late Monday afternoon after a gas line was hit, causing a leak.<\/p>\n
The leak was reported around 3:45 p.m. in the 1400 block of Fritz Drive in the Pembroke Village housing development, according to UGI spokesperson John Mason.<\/p>\n
A crew working in the area for a fiber optics company hit a UGI gas line, causing the leak, Mason said.<\/p>\n
About 75 residents in 13 units of the housing development were promptly evacuated while gas service to the area was shut down, according to Mason. UGI crews were able to shut off the gas valves by around 4:45 p.m., he said.<\/p>\n
With gas service turned off, residents were allowed to return to their residences around 7:20 p.m., according to Mason. He anticipated the repairs would be completed and gas service restored to the affected residences sometime overnight.<\/p>\n
Power in the area was also briefly shut off until gas service could be turned off. PPL Electric\u2019s outage map showed an initial 2,000 customers in the area without power.
