After the former mayor of Scranton was indicted for bribery, Cognetti ran as an independent to take on the Democratic machine that was using city government to benefit themselves instead of their residents. She won, cleaned up the system, balanced the budget, built new homes, brought in hundreds of new businesses, and led Scranton out of a 30-year period of financial distress.<\/p>\n
