Residents across the region marked Memorial Day on Monday with parades, ceremonies, and quiet moments of reflection honoring America’s fallen service members.<\/p>\n
At St. Paul’s Cemetery in Ardmore – where veterans have been laid to rest for centuries – the Lower Merion Memorial Day program brought together community members, local leaders, and families. The cemetery has hosted the ceremony since 1947.<\/p>\n
“Veterans from the Revolutionary War to the Korean War are buried here,” said Mike McKeon of the Lower Merion Memorial Day Committee during the program.<\/p>\n
This year’s event placed special emphasis on Revolutionary War veterans as the nation approaches its 250th birthday.<\/p>\n
McKeon said the turnout reflected strong community support. “We are very grateful that so many people came out that the township helped out … so it was a really nice community effort. Glad to see so many people here,” he said.<\/p>\n
For many attendees, the tradition carries deep personal meaning. “It’s always been a really important tradition to me,” said Kathleen McNamara of Wynnewood. Charlotte Scott of East Oak Lane added, “It’s important to memorialize those who sacrificed their lives for us.”<\/p>\n
A parade featuring dozens of groups preceded the ceremony, giving families an opportunity to teach younger generations about the purpose of the holiday.<\/p>\n
“I know that we’re trying to honor soldiers who have lost their lives fighting for our country to help us and keep us protected,” said 11-year-old Lauren Lamb.<\/p>\n
While Lower Merion’s parade went on as planned, the Media Memorial Day parade was canceled due to the weather. Some participants who had planned to march there still found ways to pay tribute.<\/p>\n
“This is our way to give back to them and to keep their names alive,” said Donnie Montgomery of Mu Beta Phi Fraternity Inc., whose members joined other veterans at local events.<\/p>\n
For many veterans, the day carries a heavy emotional weight. “I said a prayer for them today. All of the fallen heroes,” said Army veteran Edward Cusick.<\/p>\n
Barry McKeon, a Vietnam veteran, reflected on the loss of young service members. “A lot of young guys did make it. And that’s tough,” he said.<\/p>\n
Attendees placed three wreaths during the Ardmore ceremony, including one honoring those who never made it home. The day, speakers noted, is a time to remember their sacrifice.<\/p>\n
