DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Pennsylvania State Police say an investigation into a luxury SUV spotted in Florida uncovered what investigators believe was a vehicle title fraud scheme involving an elderly Lackawanna County resident.

According to a public information release from the Pennsylvania State Police Auto Theft Task Force, an investigator observed a 2024 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti parked in Miami Beach, Florida, while off duty in April. The vehicle displayed a Pennsylvania registration and drew attention due to the investigator’s experience with vehicle title-washing and identity theft schemes.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti is a luxury SUV that retailed for more than $50,000 when new.

After returning to duty, the investigator ran the vehicle’s registration and learned the SUV was registered and titled to an elderly man living in Jefferson Township, Lackawanna County. A title history review was then initiated.

According to state police, the review revealed that a power-of-attorney document had been submitted as part of the title transfer and registration process. Investigators subsequently determined that the individual listed on the document had previously been investigated by Pennsylvania State Police in connection with allegations involving a false firearm application and an attempted handgun purchase at a firearms dealer in Blooming Grove Township.

Further investigation determined the vehicle’s owner had knowingly purchased the SUV in his own name. Police said the vehicle is currently in Miami, Florida, in the possession of the man’s granddaughter.

The incident was classified by state police as theft by deception/identity theft, and the investigation remains ongoing.

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA CO.
