A Mexican man who is a registered sex offender that illegally re-entered the United States after his deportation in 2007 is back in federal custody, U.S. Attorney David Metcalf announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n
According to a release from Metcalf\u2019s office:<\/p>\n
Gilberto Martinez Geronimo, 52, had been illegally residing in Upper Darby until his arrest May 19.<\/p>\n
Martinez Geronimo was convicted in New Jersey on charges of aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and diseased person committing an act of sexual penetration in February 2001.<\/p>\n
Martinez Geronimo was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but was released into the custody of federal immigration officials in January 2007 and deported to Mexico that same month.<\/p>\n
Martinez Geronimo illegally reentered the country in approximately May 2021 and had been staying in Upper Darby until his arrest last month.<\/p>\n
He is charged by federal indictment with failure to register as a sex offender and unlawfully reentered the country without applying for or receiving the U.S. government\u2019s permission.<\/p>\n
