{"id":210632,"date":"2026-06-04T15:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T15:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/210632\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T15:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T15:49:08","slug":"philadelphia-council-rejects-uber-lyft-airbnb-taxes-passes-mayor-parkers-preliminary-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/210632\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia council rejects Uber, Lyft, Airbnb taxes, passes Mayor Parker&#8217;s preliminary budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Philadelphia&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/uber-lyft-tax-philadelphia-school-district-funding-cherelle-parker\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">proposed taxes on ride-hailing services<\/a>\u00a0like Uber and Lyft, hotels and short-term rentals like Airbnb, were killed from Mayor Cherelle Parker&#8217;s proposed budget Thursday. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia City Council on Thursday passed Parker&#8217;s budget without the proposed rideshare, delivery and short-term rental taxes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We thank City Council for rejecting the Mayor&#8217;s proposed $1 rideshare tax and standing up for affordability for the hundreds of thousands of Philadelphia riders and drivers who spoke out against it,&#8221; Uber said in a statement. &#8220;More than 90,000 letters were submitted in opposition to the tax, sending a clear message that Philadelphians want affordable transportation options and oppose higher costs on working families.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday night, sources in City Council told CBS News Philadelphia that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/philadelphia-city-council-budget-negotiations\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">none of the new taxes in the budget<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 the ride-hailing tax, a tax on short-term or the delivery tax to fund a pothole squad \u2014 had the nine votes needed to pass.<\/p>\n<p>Councilmembers also said proposed increases to the city&#8217;s hotel tax and increases to existing taxes on short-term rentals like Airbnb were not going to happen, as they would require state approval.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiations on the budget for fiscal year 2027 resumed Thursday morning at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Parker&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/philadelphia-uber-lyft-doordash-taxes-cherelle-parker-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">initially proposed budget in March<\/a>, set the rideshare tax to 20 cents per ride.
