We may only be two episodes in on Love Island USA<\/a> season 8, but it seems that Sean Reifel<\/a> is already a standout, thanks to his backstory. Here\u2019s the rundown: Sean is a single parent to a 2-year-old son and is known as \u201cOfficer Hot Pants\u201d in his hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was once a cop in the town\u2019s police department\u2026until he decided to quit his job and become an Islander on the reality show\u2019s latest season.<\/p>\n

After he received criticism from his former boss and the mayor of Bethlehem, Sean\u2019s family is stepping in to defend his decision.<\/p>\n

Underneath a social post from E! News, his sister, Brice Marie, commented<\/a>, \u201cSean\u2019s sister here. This could have been a great opportunity for the mayor and police department to connect with the community, generate positive publicity for the town, and help improve perceptions of law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cInstead, they chose a response that will likely reinforce the stereotypes they should be working to change. That said, I couldn\u2019t be more excited for my brother and this amazing opportunity. We\u2019ll be cheering him on every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brice\u2019s comment comes after Sean\u2019s former boss revealed she wasn\u2019t exactly thrilled with his decision to leave the force. During an interview with The Morning Call<\/a>, Bethlehem\u2019s chief of police, Michelle Knott, revealed why he technically wasn\u2019t allowed to take a leave to be on the show, which ultimately led to him quitting.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this time, I don\u2019t think there\u2019d be a department that would be willing to allow someone to leave for \u2018x\u2019 amount of weeks to go on a television show when everyone\u2019s hurting right now and overtime is being utilized to fill those gaps,\u201d she said. \u201cOfficers are getting burnt out. It\u2019s just a bad look to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

On top of that, Bethlehem\u2019s mayor, J. William Reynolds, publicly slammed Sean\u2019s exit while speaking to local news outlet WHTM<\/a>. \u201cI never thought I\u2019d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer,\u201d he said, in part.<\/p>\n

Sean\u2019s mom, Beth, echoed Brice\u2019s sentiment and cleared the air about what really happened in the comments section of a separate Instagram post from Hollywood Life, writing<\/a>, in part, \u201cThey didn\u2019t pay for a full academy for Sean. Sean came to PA after being a Contra Sheriff Deputy since April 2021 and they paid to put him through a full academy. I\u2019m not saying they didn\u2019t do any training but they also weren\u2019t fully honest about all the details. I\u2019m proud of my son. It is a brave decision to [put] yourself out there to find love under the microscope of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
