Philadelphia now has a long-term vision statement\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0 not for the next budget cycle or administration, but for 250 years from now.<\/p>\n

The 96-word statement, finalized this spring and unveiled publicly last month at our Builders Conference, emerged from three years of reporting, stakeholder sessions and feedback from nearly 1,000 residents. It will be commemorated in a mural<\/a> overlooking Elfreth\u2019s Alley, the nation\u2019s oldest continuously inhabited residential street.<\/p>\n

\n We descend from those who first walked here
and those who declared freedom here,
those denied it, those who fought for it
and those who defend it still.\n <\/p>\n

\n Between two rivers,
we remain a city of immigrants and makers,
where plain dealing mixes with creativity,
invention and love of neighbor.
We honor no tool before the people it serves.
Hoagies endure.\n <\/p>\n

\n Come what may,
Philadelphians still walk, sit on steps
and solve more problems than we create.
We build to last and put art on the walls.\n <\/p>\n

\n They do not all love us, but they remember us.
We will still boo you.\n <\/p>\n

The project started with a provocation. During Technical.ly\u2019s 2023 \u201cThriving<\/a>\u201d reporting series on economic mobility, a Brewerytown focus group participant observed<\/a> that Philadelphia leaders spend a lot of time looking at the past without using it to look meaningfully at the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That comment launched a multi-year effort<\/a>, supported by the Philadelphia Funder Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial<\/a>, administered by the Connelly Foundation<\/a>, and the City of Philadelphia Dept. of Commerce<\/a>. Technical.ly was awarded $75,000 for the multi-year project.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Early stakeholder sessions with civic leaders produced exactly what you might expect: sprawling scenarios, futurecasting predictions and lengthy recaps. After one session, an attendee emailed me a (literal) dissertation to incorporate. The process risked becoming another exercise in institutional planning \u2014 comprehensive and well-meaning, but entirely forgettable.<\/p>\n

So the approach shifted. Instead of predictions, we sought timeless qualities. Instead of scenarios, we asked: What should be true of Philadelphia in 2276 that couldn\u2019t be said of anywhere else?<\/p>\n

From sprawling predictions to timeless values<\/p>\n

The most common feedback at community events was predictable. Residents wanted solutions to today\u2019s quality-of-life problems like parking, trash, public transit and jobs. Understandable. But the most useful feedback was different: How do we balance stewardship of our past while building the future? How do we keep something distinctive?<\/p>\n

At one session, someone called out booing, and being proud of it. The quirky mix of Quaker bridge-building alongside fiery immigrant passions. We printed an earlier version of the vision, and our newsroom took it out to community meetings and festivals to get feedback. <\/p>\n

That \u201cbooing\u201d line got the most feedback, some negative, some positive. Other committees would strike it for that reason at all. But that felt like the exact reason to keep it. Technical.ly editorial director Danya Henninger, who worked with me to incorporate feedback from so many places, cautioned me, based on all the comments she\u2019d heard.\u00a0I couldn\u2019t cut it. Blame me \u2014 and the irascible Philadelphians who cheered we included it.<\/p>\n

Another theme ran through the entire project, from Thriving reporting to community conversations: Why a good share of Philadelphians were proud that this city destroyed a cute robot.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2015, HitchBOT \u2014 a hitchhiking robot that had successfully traveled across Canada and Europe \u2014 was vandalized within two weeks of arriving in Philadelphia. The incident became international news,<\/a> often cited as evidence of the city\u2019s roughness.<\/p>\n

But amid growing AI anxiety, the feedback suggested something else: a working-class sensibility that any technology should serve people, not the other way around. That insight became one of the vision\u2019s clearest lines of action: \u201cWe honor no tool before the people it serves.\u201d<\/p>\n

A permanent mural for a 250-year vision<\/p>\n

Last week at the Builders Conference, more than 50 of our attendees from across the country got their first chance to contribute to artist Sean Martorana\u2019s mural pieces<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Martorana, who has long injected arts into Philadelphia\u2019s tech and entrepreneurship circles, is designing work inspired by the vision, incorporating products from generations of inventors while symbolizing the people who make creations possible.<\/p>\n

The mural will overlook Elfreth\u2019s Alley, with additional pieces installed across Old City. More public paint days are coming.<\/p>\n

Vision statements are easy to dismiss. Most are generic enough to apply anywhere and specific enough to date quickly. This one tried to avoid both traps \u2014 to say something true about Philadelphia that will still read true in 2276.<\/p>\n

Whether it succeeds depends less on the words than on whether anyone uses them. Will a City Council member cite the vision when debating development policy? Will a mayor reference it when pitching the city to investors? Will economic development leaders return to it when choosing what to prioritize?<\/p>\n

Philadelphia excels at preserving the past. The question is whether we can be equally intentional about building the future.<\/p>\n
