{"id":21189,"date":"2025-10-31T21:24:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T21:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/21189\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T21:24:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T21:24:07","slug":"prt-delays-reopening-of-mount-washington-tunnel-after-crews-discover-design-issue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/21189\/","title":{"rendered":"PRT delays reopening of Mount Washington Tunnel after crews discover design issue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">PITTSBURGH \u2014 Pittsburgh Regional Transit said the reopening of the Mount Washington Tunnel has been delayed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The tunnel has been closed since February, when crews began \u201ccritical infrastructure upgrades.\u201d Those upgrades include replacing tracks, restoring the roadway inside the tunnel and repairing overhead electric lines that power light-rail vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpxi.com\/news\/local\/mount-washington-tunnel-close-8-months-critical-upgrades\/FZIXMDNALZDWTBAB46JZGXJVMA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wpxi.com\/news\/local\/mount-washington-tunnel-close-8-months-critical-upgrades\/FZIXMDNALZDWTBAB46JZGXJVMA\/\">PREVIOUS COVERAGE &gt;&gt;&gt; Mount Washington Tunnel to close for 8 months for \u2018critical\u2019 upgrades<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">PRT said crews noticed a design issue that will require newly installed tracks to be adjusted to meet proper standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Officials are working on getting a reimbursement from the design consultant to take care of the adjustments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">A contractor is working on setting an official timeline to reopen the tunnel.
