Pennsylvania: \u2018It Was the Worst Call\u2019<\/p>\n

In Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags lowered statewide<\/a> on May 30 to honor Central Berks Regional Police Officer Kristen Yeager, who died in the line of duty on May 29.<\/p>\n

Yeager, 42, a mother of three, was killed while responding to assist another agency when her patrol car left Route 73 in Earl Township, entered a ditch, and struck a tree. She was ejected from the vehicle and later died in the hospital.<\/p>\n

Homes and businesses displayed blue lights, ribbons, and balloons\u2014a visual echo of the policing community she served.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to honor her as best we can, and we\u2019re doing it big and proud,\u201d Central Berks Police Chief Justin Johnson told 6abc.com.<\/p>\n

For Johnson, the moment cut deeper. \u201cIt was the worst call I\u2019ve received in my career,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Others focused on who Yeager was beyond the uniform. \u201cShe was just a genuine person. She was meant to be a police officer, she really was,\u201d said Stephanie Yerger of Mount Penn Borough.<\/p>\n

Dulis said the loss resonated on a more personal level. \u201cMy mom was actually a Reading police officer for the city for 20 years and she got the pleasure of training Kristen,\u201d she said. \u201cI really connect with this, and it\u2019s so hard to know that she\u2019s leaving kids behind. It\u2019s a shame. I wish she wasn\u2019t gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeager had served in multiple Berks County departments before joining Central Berks. Colleagues described her as a \u201ccommunity gem\u201d\u2014a phrase repeated across tributes\u2014reflecting how closely she was tied to the communities she policed.<\/p>\n

Maryland<\/a>: Firefighter Dies After Completing 24-Hour Shift<\/p>\n

In Maryland, flags were lowered on June 1 after Governor Wes Moore issued an order honoring Firefighter\/Paramedic Demair Lloyd, a nearly two\u2011decade member of the Prince George\u2019s County Fire\/EMS Department.<\/p>\n

Lloyd died from a medical emergency at home shortly after completing a 24\u2011hour shift. He had served since 2006, spending much of his career at Station 841 in Calverton.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was not only a valued teammate but also a dear friend, and his absence is deeply felt by all of us,\u201d the department said.<\/p>\n

The circumstances\u2014a death immediately following a full shift\u2014have shaped how the loss is being understood within the fire service community. Officials have not confirmed whether it will be formally classified as a line\u2011of\u2011duty death.<\/p>\n

Support services, including peer teams and counseling, have been made available as colleagues process the sudden loss of a firefighter who had spent nearly two decades answering calls.<\/p>\n

Flags will remain lowered until the date of Lloyd\u2019s interment, which is yet to be announced.<\/p>\n

Virginia<\/a>: a Routine Call, a Fatal Outcome<\/p>\n

In Virginia, flags are at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on June 5 under an order from Governor Abigail Spanberger honoring Carroll County Sheriff\u2019s Deputy and U.S. Air Force veteran, Logan Utt.<\/p>\n

Utt, 31, was shot and killed while responding to a welfare check\u2014a routine call that turned deadly when authorities say a suspect opened fire on deputies, killing Utt and injuring another officer.<\/p>\n

Spanberger said his life \u201cexemplified the highest ideals of law enforcement and public service,\u201d describing his death as a reminder of the risks officers face daily.<\/p>\n

Utt had also served as a volunteer firefighter before joining the sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

The suspect was later arrested in North Carolina and charged in connection with the shooting.<\/p>\n

In Carroll County, memorials have formed outside the sheriff\u2019s office, with flowers, messages and quiet gatherings\u2014a less visible but no less significant expression of grief than the large public turnout seen in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

Ohio: Honoring a Different Kind of Service<\/p>\n

In Ohio, the half-staff order marks a different kind of loss.<\/p>\n

Governor Mike DeWine has directed flags to be lowered on Sunday, June 7, the day of the funeral for former state senator and Lorain County Administrator Jeff Armbruster. He died at 78 after a battle with cancer, having spent decades in public life\u2014including roles as mayor, state senator and county administrator.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe won\u2019t be known for a five-story building, or he won\u2019t be known for a highway. But those that have followed him, he\u2019ll be known for a couple hundred little things he did that all improved the quality of life in Lorain County,\u201d Lorain County Commissioner Jeff Riddell said.<\/p>\n

The order applies across Lorain County and key state sites, with other areas permitted to follow.<\/p>\n

Colleagues remembered him less for a single defining achievement than for the accumulation of smaller ones.<\/p>\n
