Authorities announced the arrest Friday of a 25-year-old Allentown man in the alleged rape of a child a decade ago.<\/p>\n
Christian Tavares was arraigned before District Judge Ronald Manescu on charges of rape of child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and related counts \u2014 all felonies. <\/p>\n
Tavares was released on $50,000 unsecured bail and faces a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled for Nov. 17. At the hearing, a district judge will be asked to determine if there is sufficient evidence to send the charges toward trial.<\/p>\n
Lehigh County District Attorney<\/a> Gavin Holihan and Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca said in a news release the alleged rape occurred in 2015 in a home in the city. <\/p>\n Police received the report of the rape this past April, leading to a forensic interview with the alleged victim who was elementary school age at the time of the alleged assault.<\/p>\n Tavares\u2019 attorney, Paul Mallis, told lehighvalleylive.com on Friday his client has no criminal history and had no prior contact with the criminal justice system. Tavares voluntarily surrendered Friday after learning of a warrant for his arrest, according to Mallis.<\/p>\n \u201cThe facts of this case are alleged to have occurred about a decade ago at this point and only now are they coming to the surface,\u201d the defense attorney said. \u201cWe look forward to our upcoming preliminary hearing date and working toward a resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n This case was investigated by Allentown Police Detective Suzanne Toth and will be prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney Sara A.
