ALLENTOWN, Pa. \u2014 Authorities are investigating a shooting that left a juvenile dead and two others injured Saturday night in Allentown.<\/p>\n
According to the Allentown Police Department, officers responded around 10:01 p.m. to the area of North Jay Street and East North Street following reports of gunfire.<\/p>\n
When officers arrived, they found three victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel treated the victims at the scene before transporting all three to area hospitals.<\/p>\n
The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office said one of the victims, a 17-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at 11:31 p.m. in the hospital’s emergency department.<\/p>\n
The teen died from gunshot injuries, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.<\/p>\n
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, June 8, at the Lehigh County Coroner\u2019s Office and Forensic Center.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the victim has been positively identified, but his name is being withheld to allow the family time to grieve privately.<\/p>\n
As investigators work to determine what led to the shooting, some residents say they are increasingly concerned about crime in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
Dave Wylie, who has lived in the area for 25 years, said incidents of violence have become a growing concern for longtime residents. “When’s it going to stop?” Wylie said.<\/p>\n
Wylie said he believes concerns about public safety have changed daily life for many people in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
“You don’t want to go out at night now. You can’t even go out during the daytime. It’s just insane,” he said.<\/p>\n
While police continue to investigate, Wylie said he fears violence in the community could continue despite increased law enforcement efforts.<\/p>\n
“I think you’re going to have more police presence. But yeah, I don’t see it getting any better,” he said.<\/p>\n
The investigation is being conducted by the Allentown Police Department, the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force, the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office.<\/p>\n
Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk released a statement, expressing his condolences and saying that “we have to do better.”<\/p>\n
“Among the great tragedies of our time is that so many guns find their way into the hands of so many young people so easily. This was a person not even 18 years old\u2026. A boy… a child\u2026 who had his whole life ahead of him. This happened to another young man two weeks ago in our city.<\/p>\n
We have to do better. We have to stop the flow of guns into the hands of young people,” the full statement reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n
No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released additional information about the shooting.
