MOOSIC \u2014 The borough\u2019s new, modern emergency services building is complete, housing the police and fire departments under one roof.<\/p>\n

Greenwood Hose Company moved to the $6.1 million emergency services building at 3727 Birney Ave., directly behind its previous, now-demolished firehouse, in November. The Moosic Police Department followed in December, moving into half of the 18,000-plus-square-foot building.<\/p>\n

The station gives the Fire Department its first new headquarters in nearly 50 years. For the Police Department, it is their first purpose-built police station in a century. The force operated out of rented space above a body shop at 820 Springbrook Ave. after toxic mold shut down their station in May 2022.<\/p>\n

Fire Department<\/p>\n

Firefighter Ryan Joyce said the new building provides firefighters upgrades that allow them to do their best work in keeping the community safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a tremendous positive. Since we\u2019ve moved in there has been a lot more storage for such things as rescue and fire equipment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

And, should the need arise for another fire vehicle, the new headquarters has room for that.<\/p>\n

The facility also has locker rooms and showers. Another plus, Joyce said, is a gym made possible by stakeholders in the community who facilitated new equipment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t do our jobs effectively if we don\u2019t pay attention to our health,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

There is also a sleeping area containing bunk beds in case a weather or other emergency necessitates firefighters stay the night. Other benefits of the new building include a washing machine, an area for rope rescue practice, a lounge for studying and a dedicated office space.<\/p>\n

The new building translates into keeping the community safe, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis building is the heart of the community,\u201d Joyce said. \u201cWe want the taxpayers to know they got the product they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police Department<\/p>\n

After moving from a converted veterinarian\u2019s office to rented space above a body shop, Police Chief Rick Janesko was excited about moving his officers into a police station, facilitating their work in protecting the community.<\/p>\n

Janesko said the building\u2019s location on Birney Avenue provides his 11 officers quick access to every part of the borough. In addition, his officers appreciate having their own work stations, computers and more space.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s enough room to spread out and the officers aren\u2019t on top of each other,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Other perks of the new space are an interview room for victims, two interrogation rooms, two holding cells, male and female locker rooms with bathrooms and showers, an evidence room with special ventilation for strong-smelling drugs like marijuana, an armorer\u2019s room to store and maintain police weapons, a decompression room for officers, and a sally port to safely bring people in custody into the station, Janesko said.<\/p>\n

Officers appreciate having their own garage in which they can search a car or wash their patrol vehicle.<\/p>\n

A community room provides the opportunity for the department to host trainings, even inviting other departments to participate.<\/p>\n

The project received $3 million in federal funding, $1 million in state funding, $300,000 from Lackawanna County and $300,000 from Geisinger. Moosic is also contributed $1.5 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that both sides are absolutely loving the building and the facility,\u201d Moosic Mayor Robert Bennie said. \u201cIt\u2019s a generational investment that will serve the residents of Moosic and beyond for decades and decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Monday update<\/p>\n

Then:\u00a0In October, Moosic\u2019s police and fire departments were looking forward to moving into their new emergency services building on Birney Avenue, after one year of construction.<\/p>\n
