A local town will mark a milestone anniversary with music. Archbald will celebrate the borough\u2019s 150th anniversary with a Sesquicentennial Community Concert on Sunday, June 14.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can never forget our past,\u201d said Erin Owen, Archbald Borough Council member and Archbald 150 Committee member.<\/p>\n
Throughout Archbald, there are three historical landmarks including Gravity Slope Colliery, fan house and oil house from the town\u2019s coal mining days, according to Owen.<\/p>\n
Owen is the fourth generation in her family to live in Archbald. She is \u201cproud of our town and green space.\u201d<\/p>\n
The best thing about the town is the \u201cpeople who live in our community,\u201d said Owen. People who live in Archbald are \u201cpeople who may leave the town and want to come back and retire in their hometown,\u201d according to Owen.<\/p>\n
To celebrate the anniversary, the borough is trying to have an event each month and \u201ckeep the passion and excitement going,\u201d said Owen. The celebration kicked off with the Archbald Winter Carnival in February and Discover Your Ancestors genealogy event in March, according to Owen.<\/p>\n
The next event celebrating the borough\u2019s anniversary is the Archbald Sesquicentennial Community Concert performed by the Brass Storm, which will be held on the third flood of the Archbald Borough Building, 400 Church St., Archbald, on Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public, according to Owen.<\/p>\n
The concert will consist of classical selections and patriotic favorites to pop, rock and hymns, according to Melissa Hughes, Brass Storm secretary and French horn player.<\/p>\n
The ensemble features Alexandra Castillo on tuba, James Greenfield and Josephine Green on trumpet, Hughes on French horn and Christian Carrion on trombone. However, Annalise Yeich will substitute for Green on trumpet for the Archbald Sesquicentennial Community Concert, according to Hughes.<\/p>\n
The Archbald 150th Committee is teaming up with other local groups, including the Archbald Neighborhood Association, to put on events for the community, according to Owen.<\/p>\n
This summer, the Archbald Neighborhood Association will hold a beach party at Aylesworth Park, according to Kayleigh Cornell, co-founder of the Archbald Neighborhood Association.<\/p>\n
Cornell grew up in Archbald and came back to the borough after studying away at college. With the 150th anniversary events, Cornell said she wants to help highlight the amazing resources and places in town.<\/p>\n
The Aylesworth Beach Party will consist of live music, swimming and activities for kids. The county will also be bringing in fresh sand to put on the beach, according to Cornell.<\/p>\n
Cornell said the Aylesworth Beach Party will \u201cmake it a great day at one of our county parks.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just want to do something for the community,\u201d said Cornell. \u201cSomething to bring people together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cornell said her favorite part of organizing the community events is \u201cseeing the smiles on people coming together talking\u201d and the \u201cjoy of the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNeighboring towns are welcome to celebrate with us since we are so closely connected,\u201d said Owen.<\/p>\n
Other event plans include a Mass and breakfast at Christ the King Parish followed later by a buffet dinner and live band in August, an antique car show, time capsule and a motorcade, according to Owen.<\/p>\n
