{"id":216475,"date":"2026-06-11T14:18:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T14:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/216475\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T14:18:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T14:18:07","slug":"philly-school-district-will-not-cut-340-jobs-after-city-leaders-commit-to-finding-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/216475\/","title":{"rendered":"Philly school district will not cut 340 jobs after city leaders commit to finding funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/tags\/school-district-of-philadelphia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School District of Philadelphia<\/a> has reversed course on its plans to eliminate 340 staff positions after city officials pledged Wednesday to find a new source of funding.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/tags\/cherelle-parker\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cherelle Parker<\/a> said she and City Council President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/tags\/kenyatta-johnson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kenyatta Johnson<\/a> would identify a regular stream of revenue to help the school district retain the positions. They will collaborate over the next year to locate a recurring annual $48 million.<\/p>\n<p>MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/larry-krasner-letter-mayor-cherelle-parker-philly-budget\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DA Larry Krasner presses Mayor Cherelle Parker to reconsider his budget requests in open letter<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If they cannot find or agree on this revenue, Parker said she would make &#8220;painful cuts in city programs,&#8221; per a press release.<\/p>\n<p>City Council already allocated $48 million for the school district <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/philly-budget-city-council-uber-airbnb-taxes-rejected-parker\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the preliminary budget<\/a> passed last week, but the funding would only last for the fiscal year 2027. The mayor had proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/philadelphia-school-district-funding-rideshare-tax\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a $1 tax on all rideshare trips<\/a> to save the 340 school-based staff positions, but city lawmakers stripped it from the budget.<\/p>\n<p>Superintendent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/tags\/tony-watlington\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tony Watlington<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/school-district-of-philadelphia-225-million-budget-cuts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had proposed cuts in March<\/a> to help balance the school district&#8217;s budget. Under his plan, the school district would have reassigned the 340 employees to other vacant roles and axed 220 substitute positions.
