“This is our 6th annual kitten shower. We look for food and litter, mostly for all the kittens that we’re taking in. It’s usually around 50 kittens we take in,” said Davis.

The kitten shower looks to see the nonprofit stock up on donations that will help them care for the felines as staff work to get them adopted.

In recent years, the number of kittens Davis and others have cared for has only gone up. “Ever since the pandemic, it seems to be worse. I think most everybody will tell you that adoptions are down and outdoor cats are up. So many times we get phone calls, people threw their cat outside, and it has kittens now, and that’s where we come in to try to help,” she said.

While trying to care for kittens, Davis says they are also trying to solve the problem at the start.

Just this week, in a letter to Scranton City Council, the nonprofit asked to include a clause in the city’s rental ordinance that would require tenants to provide proof of spaying or neutering of their pets to their landlords.

“I get so many phone calls from people that the neighbor moved out and threw the cat outside. I get calls from landlords that people had cats, and they left them there. Where, what can I do with them? And we need to start at the beginning instead of the end,” said Davis.

But for now, volunteers will continue caring for the kittens they have, and hope this week’s kitten shower will help them get the supplies they need.

St. Cats’ 6th annual Kitten Shower will be held Friday, June 12, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 13, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
