{"id":218306,"date":"2026-06-13T13:24:21","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T13:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/218306\/"},"modified":"2026-06-13T13:24:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T13:24:21","slug":"erie-residents-observe-women-veterans-recognition-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/218306\/","title":{"rendered":"Erie residents observe Women Veterans Recognition Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Women Veterans Recognition Day is observed annually on June 12, and on Friday afternoon, the Erie VA Medical Center hosted a star-spangled celebration in honor of women who served.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Women from all branches of the U.S. Military, as well as their friends and family, came to this special gathering to recognize women&#8217;s continued contributions to the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-ylk=\"slk:EMTA celebrates 14th Fest, 60 years of service;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yourerie.com\/news\/local-news\/emta-celebrates-14th-fest-60-years-of-service\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0EMTA celebrates 14th Fest, 60 years of service\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Guests were able to enjoy food, drinks, and patriotic goodies before guest speakers made their remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This date is significant because it commemorates the 1948 signing of the Women&#8217;s Armed Forces Integration Act, which allowed women to serve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We have some amazing trailblazers behind us who have really forged the way for our women today. And women are the fastest growing population in the veteran community; they&#8217;re serving in very high numbers,&#8221; said Maggie Westcott, a VA Medical Center Women&#8217;s Mental Health Champion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It is very nice to know that they celebrate women in the service,&#8221; said Mary Frisina, a U.S. Navy veteran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Frisina said that when she started, women weren&#8217;t even allowed on the ships, and while she is happy to see the progress that was made, she stresses that new recruits are still blazing the trail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
