(WHTM) \u2014 Anybody on a Pennsylvania road last week likely saw a state trooper.<\/p>\n

Police started enforcing Paul Miller\u2019s law last Friday by issuing drivers on their cellphones a $50 ticket plus court costs. Between June 8 and 10, troopers cited 694 drivers across the state for violating the law, state police said.<\/p>\n

Lawmakers enacted the law last year, but police only issued warnings for the first 12 months. It\u2019s named in honor of Miller, who was killed in 2010 when a distracted driver crossed a center grass divider and collided head-on with his car.<\/p>\n

Drivers are generally prohibited from using phones in vehicles, including when stopped at a red light. However, they may pull over to the side of or off a highway and stop the vehicle to use their phone. There is also an exception to communicate with law enforcement or other emergency services to prevent injury.<\/p>\n

The ban does not include a GPS device, a device integrated into the vehicle or a communications device affixed to a mass transit vehicle or bus.<\/p>\n

Other than the fine, the law allows for drivers convicted of homicide by vehicle and driving while distracted to be sentenced up to an additional five years in prison.<\/p>\n
