If you looked closely during the 1720s\u200a\u2014\u200ayou might see a young man swimming routinely in the Schulkyll River<\/a>. It wasn\u2019t much of a surprise since water has been important to Philadelphia since the very beginning. Long before the European colonization that led to the creation of William Penn\u2019s Philadelphia between the Delaware<\/a> and Schulkyll Rivers\u200a\u2014\u200anative Americans used the land<\/a> and the rivers for both sustanance and recreation.<\/p>\n

Ever since then, Philly has been winning on the water. In 2026\u200a\u2014\u200anothing has changed.<\/p>\n

St. Joseph\u2019s University is winning on the water once again, too. At the 2026 IRA National Championships\u200a\u2014\u200athe Hawks made it to the Final Three. On the peaceful Lake Natoma\u200a\u2014\u200aSt. Joseph\u2019s had a very good showing<\/a> in the two thousand meter. The Hawks finished just a shade behind<\/a> Brown University \u2014scoring second place with a final clocked time of 6:43.150. Temple<\/a> would also beat out La Salle in the D-final to become ranked 19th in the nation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This week\u200a\u2014\u200ait was announced that 8 of the Saint Joseph\u2019s Women\u2019s<\/a> Rowing Team have also been recognized as Collegiate Rowing Coaches<\/a> Association Scholar-Athletes.<\/p>\n

One year after St. Joe\u2019s Prep won a National<\/a> Championship at Sarasota\u200a\u2014\u200aThe Prep<\/a> won the boys senior eight\u200a\u2014\u200aat the Ninety-Ninth Stotesbury Cup Regatta in May 2026. In the same month\u200a\u2014\u200athe Hawks achieved the Varsity<\/a> Eight Petite Final at the 2026 Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been two years since Drexel mens rowing dominated the Dadvail Regatta with a resounding<\/a> win in 2024. This weekend\u200a\u2014\u200athat championship mentality prevailed yet again as Drexel captured both the men\u2019s point trophy<\/a> as well as the overall trophy<\/a> with a time of nearly five and a half minutes. Last year\u2019s champion<\/a> (Temple) placed second in the event<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And that young man who swam the Schulkyll regularly<\/a>? A man who would influence swimming<\/a> programs<\/a> to this day? It was none other that Dr. Benjamin Franklin.<\/p>\n
