{"id":219645,"date":"2026-06-15T15:16:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T15:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/219645\/"},"modified":"2026-06-15T15:16:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T15:16:16","slug":"introducing-upper-darbys-first-mural-arts-pilot-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/219645\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing Upper Darby\u2019s first mural arts pilot program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Delco to Chesco and Montco to Bucks, what about life in Philly\u2019s suburbs do you want WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/udtj.org\/muralarts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">budding mural arts pilot program<\/a> is now underway in Upper Darby.\n<\/p>\n<p>UDTJ, <a href=\"https:\/\/udtj.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a local social justice group<\/a>, is leading the initiative. The goal is to fill the township\u2019s public spaces with vibrant murals by connecting local artists with interested property owners.\n<\/p>\n<p>Kyle McIntyre, mural arts coordinator for UDTJ, said the program will be split into two timelines:\u00a0 fall 2023 and spring 2024. The former is already underway.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are starting small. This is the first time we\u2019ve ever embarked on this project,\u201d McIntyre said. \u201cWe wanted to give ourselves attainable goals but also do something that\u2019s long lasting and so we are painting these utility boxes. We\u2019re actually using vinyl wraps.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The artworks will go to the township for initial review and then before the public. The hope is to have these art installations find a home on traffic signal boxes in Upper Darby by October. A soft deadline for these smaller murals has passed, but McIntyre said the organization is still in a \u201crolling application period.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The Upper Darby Mural Arts Pilot Program would like to install three to four large wall murals as part two of the initiative. Prospective artists and interested property owners have until Nov. 1 to submit an online form to UDTJ.\n<\/p>\n<p>McIntyre said all mural ideas must satisfy at least one requirement of creating excitement for the community, expressing a message of hope, equity, and love, honoring the history of Upper Darby, celebrating the diversity of the township, or inspiring residents through their cultural heritage.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have a passion and you have a great idea, submit it because we can help make that the reality,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>Planning for the large murals will begin in November and December. Artists will have all of January to design the installation.
