Dozens of people experiencing homelessness in Wilmington have been moved out of a controversial tent camp where they have been living<\/a>, according to the city’s mayor. <\/p>\n

City officials said over 50 people who had been staying at the encampment at Christina Park are now living in emergency housing, substance abuse treatment centers or permanent housing. <\/p>\n

For the people who have refused assistance, officials gave them two-week motel stays as case managers are assigned to them to find a more permanent solution. <\/p>\n

Wilmington Mayor John Carney said addressing homelessness is easier said than done and expensive. He acknowledged the rollout of the tent camp plan was not perfect, but said the results were positive and the city’s intentions were good.<\/p>\n

“It’s kind of a moral obligation to do what we can and that’s the way we’ve approached it,” Carney said.<\/p>\n

The mayor said the encampment was always intended to be temporary, adding that neighbors in the area want their park back.<\/p>\n

“Every person experiencing homelessness lives with different needs, different misfortunes, and different circumstances,” Del. Attorney General Kathy Jennings wrote in a statement. “The City did not consult us in advance. After we learned about the evictions we were clear with the Mayor\u2019s office that, while our Community Engagement team would be available to assist with service referrals, we would not prosecute people for their nonviolent presence in a park where the City put them. That policy has not changed.”<\/p>\n
