EASTON, Pa. – Juneteenth celebrations are taking shape across our region, and one local nonprofit is playing a key role in making sure the holiday’s history remains front and center.<\/p>\n

69 News Reporter Sydney Kay was in Easton with a look into what’s planned this week.<\/p>\n

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, the Juneteenth Lehigh Valley website says.<\/p>\n

The website says it marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were free.<\/p>\n

This year’s Juneteenth Lehigh Valley events are taking place from June 13 to the 20.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr. Karen Britt, President of Juneteenth Lehigh Valley<\/a>, said the holiday is about understanding authentic American history. When we have freedom for everyone, everyone can join in and celebrate, she said.<\/p>\n

She said her organization has three pillars: elevate, celebrate, and educate. Juneteenth Lehigh Valley awards educational scholarships to graduating seniors.<\/p>\n

This is the 6th year the group has been putting\u00a0Juneteenth events together.<\/p>\n

On Friday night, it is Juneteenth with the IronPigs at\u00a0Coca-Cola Park.\u00a0 It’s the organization’s third year as the event sponsor. 69 News Anchor Jaciel Cordoba will be throwing out the first pitch at the event, which will feature fireworks.<\/p>\n

“It’s a wonderful family event,”\u00a0Britt said.<\/p>\n

Juneteenth Lehigh Valley will be holding a Juneteenth parade Saturday at noon. The parade will flow right into Riverside Park on Larry Holmes Drive, where a\u00a0music festival will take place at the amphitheater.<\/p>\n

Britt said the festival will feature bands, DJ, dancing, and about 35 vendors.\u00a0<\/p>\n
