Then he picked me up and threw me down the stairs, put me out of sight.” A neighbor found Carlson and immediately called 911. During the trial, Hilliard told police he attacked Carlson out of “convenience.” It was revealed that Hilliard was under the influence at the time, and a doctor testified that he was experiencing a drug-induced psychotic episode. Hilliard’s attorney, Frank Walker, argued that his client\u2019s state of mind meant he could not have had the intent to kill. “He’s in treatment right now; he’s continued to go to treatment. He’s been going to treatment since he was released about a year and a half ago,” Walker said. However, Carlson, his neighbors, and the judge disagreed with the defense’s argument. “Justice was served, and we appreciate the judge listening to the case,” said neighbor Virginia Flaherty Carlson also expressed frustration over what he perceived as Hilliard’s lack of remorse throughout the trial. “I try to make eye contact with him or his old man and want him to say we’re sorry,” Carlson said.
