This summer, the city of Erie is investing $2.5 million into maintaining safe and reliable streets across the city, according to its website.<\/p>\n

For 2026, the city will be using 18,843 tons of hot-mix asphalt while paving 7.6 miles of roadway on 72 streets both on the east and west side.<\/p>\n

How the city selects streets for paving<\/p>\n

Each year, the city develops a paving list based off roadway surveys, requests from residents and coordination with utility work.<\/p>\n

New road-imaging technology was purchased through Roadway Management Technologies.<\/p>\n

Budget woes: City of Erie sees layoffs, expense cuts in wake of $12M budget crisis<\/a><\/p>\n

This system, which was funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, assigns each street a pavement condition index score which helps prioritize the repairs.<\/p>\n

How the paving in Erie is funded<\/p>\n

Funding for the paving program comes from funding streams:<\/p>\n

Community Development Block Grant: $894,868 total investment for 38 city streets focused on low-to-moderate income neighborhoods with work done by the city’s Bureau of Streets;<\/p>\n

Erie County Liquid Fuels Program: $500,000 total investment for 10 streets in outlying areas of the city which is open for bids as of June 3.<\/p>\n

Capital Funds and Street Degradation Fees: $1,085,000 total investment for 24 streets in outlying areas of the city that is open for bids as of June 1.<\/p>\n
