Pittsburgh International Airport\u2019s new terminal was named one of the world\u2019s most beautiful airports by a prestigious architectural organization. <\/p>\n
France-based Prix Versailles announced Monday that Pittsburgh\u2019s airport was named to its World\u2019s Most Beautiful Airports list, along with six other airports from around the world. <\/p>\n
The airports that made the list exhibit \u201cextraordinary, distinctive architecture\u201d and also \u201cresolve the apparent conflict between the increasing frequency of travel and the need for speed \u2013 both central to an airport\u2019s purpose \u2013 on the one hand and, on the other, the singularity of a form of tourism that aims to be accessible and that values people\u2019s time in places that, in this day and age, can no longer be described as mere \u2018transfer\u2019 spaces,\u201d said Jerome Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles.<\/p>\n
Pittsburgh\u2019s $1.7 billion terminal, which opened in November, features a vast undulating roofline that emulates the Allegheny Mountains, and 38 steel columns create a canopy reminiscent of the region\u2019s forests, Prix Versailles noted.<\/p>\n
Glass walls let in natural light, and four outdoor terraces will soon provide travelers access to fresh air. The airport also showcases local artists, and the \u201cPetal Tunnel\u201d pays homage to the Fort Pitt Tunnel. <\/p>\n
The airport\u2019s \u201csignificantly shortened passenger distances and its inclusive comfort features make it a role model for global air travel,\u201d Gouadain said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing named to the Prix Versailles World\u2019s Most Beautiful Airports List is an extraordinary honor and a testament to the vision, talent and determination of everyone who helped bring our new terminal to life,\u201d said airport CEO Christina Cassotis in a statement.<\/p>\n
The airport was deigned by architectural firms Gensler, HDR, and luis vidal + architects.<\/p>\n
One other U.S. airport \u2013 San Diego International Airport \u2013 was selected.
